Good kitchen lighting is not a fixture. It is four layers doing four different jobs: ambient light for the room, task light where your hands work, accent light for depth, and decorative light for character. Most kitchens have the first layer and the last one, skip the two in the middle, and end up beautiful and hard to cook in. Lighting has to be decided during design, because moving a wire after the drywall is up is a different project.

It is seven o'clock. Dinner is going. You are standing at the counter with a knife in one hand and an onion in the other, and there is a shadow falling straight across the cutting board.

It is your shadow.

You shift left to get the light back. Now you are cutting at an angle, half blind, in the most expensive room in your house. Because you did spend real money here. New cabinets. A slab of stone that stopped you cold in the showroom. An island big enough to land a plane on. And here you are at dinner, chopping in your own shade.

That is not a dark kitchen. Somebody put plenty of light in this room. It is a badly lit one, and it is the most underestimated part of a remodel, every single time.

The Real Problem

The problem is a kitchen you can't actually see in

People plan a kitchen in daylight. You walk the showroom at noon. You picture your own space with the morning sun pouring through the window, and everything looks bright and open and finished.

Then the sun goes down.

The kitchen you actually live in is the six o'clock kitchen and the nine o'clock kitchen. Coffee before the sun is up. Homework at the counter. Cleanup after dinner. That is when lighting stops being a detail and becomes the whole experience of the room.

Here is the strange part. A bad faucet annoys you once in a while. Bad lighting you feel every time you walk in after dark, and most people never name it. They quietly decide the kitchen feels off and never figure out why. It was the light the whole time.

The Four Layers

The four layers of a kitchen that works

Good kitchen lighting is four fixtures doing four different jobs, and the pros build them in a set order. This layered approach is what professional lighting designers, and groups like the American Lighting Association, treat as the standard for a room done right.

Layer	What it does	What happens without it
Ambient	General fill for the room. Recessed cans or a flush ceiling fixture, the base layer everything else sits on top of.	The room reads dim and cave-like even with pretty fixtures running.
Task	Light aimed where your hands work. Under the cabinets onto the counter, over the island, over the sink.	You work in your own shadow. This is the layer most kitchens skip.
Accent	The depth. It washes a backsplash, lights the inside of a glass cabinet, picks out the thing you are proud of.	The room is lit but flat. It never quite feels designed.
Decorative	The jewelry. Pendants over the island, the fixture that makes a statement. It earns its keep on looks.	The kitchen works but has no personality at eye level.

The order is the whole point. Most kitchens have ambient and decorative, a ceiling light and something pretty over the island, and skip the two in the middle that do the actual work.

Common Misses

These are the misses we walk into the most. None of them are exotic. They are ordinary, and they are in most kitchens we are called to fix, including some that were remodeled a few years ago by someone who never thought about the light.

The miss	Why you feel it every night
One ceiling light doing everything	A single fixture in the center of the room cannot light a counter that runs along the walls. You will always be standing between it and your work.
No under cabinet lighting	The single biggest miss in the Valley. Your upper cabinets throw the counter into shadow, and the counter is exactly where the knife is.
An island with nothing usable over it	Either nothing at all, or a gorgeous pendant that looks incredible and lights nothing. Pretty and useful are allowed to be two different fixtures.
Recessed cans in the wrong spot	Put a can behind you and you cast your own shadow onto the counter. A light in the wrong place is a light working against you.
No dimmer anywhere	One brightness setting, full blast, all day. Your kitchen at breakfast and your kitchen at a dinner party want to be two different rooms.

The Cost

What does kitchen lighting cost?

The honest answer is that it depends on how far you take it, and we would rather show you what moves the number than pretend there is one price. A typical kitchen starts with a few pendants and under cabinet LED strip. That is the baseline. Everything after that is a real fixture, real wiring, and real labor.

What moves the number	What it involves
The baseline	Two to four pendants plus new under cabinet LED strip. Almost every kitchen we build includes at least this much.
Recessed ceiling lights	We use canless LED, which sits cleaner in the ceiling and runs far cooler than the old cans. Count drives the number here.
Additional strip locations	LED strip inside upper glass cabinets, toe kick lighting, or a lit wrap on the back of the island. Each one is its own run.
Dimming and controls	A proper dimming setup so every layer has its own control instead of one switch running the room.
The fixtures themselves	At the level we build, selection matters as much as count. Warm dimmable light shows off your finishes and makes food look right.
Ways the number comes down	There are only two: include less lighting, or choose plainer fixtures. In a room you use three times a day, neither tends to age well.

A Real Project

A Scottsdale kitchen we lit right

Usually badly lit means too little light. Once in a while it is the exact opposite.

Lee and Laurette's Scottsdale kitchen came to us drowning in fixtures. Close to thirty of the small four inch halogen recessed cans. Three pendants over the peninsula and two more over the island. Three sconces tucked into the skylight recess. Strip lighting on top of the upper cabinets and along the soffit, under cabinet lighting, toe kick lighting, a hanging light over the breakfast nook, and still more of it spilling into the family room. Nine switches to run the whole circus.

And it barely worked. The cans were halogen, buried in the ceiling insulation, and they ran so hot they shut themselves off after five to seven minutes. One would cool down and flicker back on just as another quit. The ceiling was a slow, random light show nobody asked for.

We removed every single light location and started over fresh. The kitchen is large, so we could not skimp: ten canless LED ceiling lights in the kitchen, four more around the breakfast nook table with a medium chandelier above it, and three pendants over the peninsula. We reduced the cabinet accent lighting to a single 24 volt LED strip recessed into a channel on the underside of the upper cabinets, in place of the jumble that was there. And rather than putting a new strip light back above the soffit, we added one directional recessed light aimed to spotlight the personal items they display on the plant shelf. Nine switches became five, and every layer went on a dimmer.

Lee and Laurette are thrilled. The ceiling does not look cluttered with lights anymore, and the new ones do not get hot and shut themselves off at unpredictable times. The point was never more light. It was the right light, planned.

This one carried work most lighting projects do not. Pulling thirty cans leaves thirty holes, so the entire ceiling had to be repaired and repainted.

How We Work

How we plan the light before you ever see a proposal

Here is what keeps all of this from going sideways. We decide the lighting during design, not after the drywall is up and it is too late to move a wire.

Every fixture, every switch, every dimmer, chosen and located while the plan is still on paper. Where you stand to chop. Where the light needs to fall so you are not in your own way. What goes on a dimmer and what does not. It is settled before we hand you a proposal, and once it is settled, it is locked.

That is the difference between a kitchen that happens to have lights in it and a kitchen that was lit on purpose.

Kitchen lighting questions, answered

Straight answers. No runaround.

Layered lighting. Ambient light for the room, task light where you work, accent light for depth, and decorative light for character. A kitchen lit with only one of these will always feel like something is missing.
Yes. It is the layer that puts light directly on the counter with nothing casting a shadow. If you cook, it is not a luxury. It is the most useful light in the room.
Yes, as many as you can. A kitchen is a workspace at 7am and a gathering space at 7pm. Dimmers let one room be both.
Almost always missing task light and poor placement. A beautiful kitchen with one central fixture will still leave you working in your own shadow. The fix is adding the layers that were skipped.
Some of it. Adding dimmers or under cabinet strips can be done on its own. Moving recessed cans or rewiring for new fixtures means opening the ceiling, which is why lighting is best planned as part of the remodel rather than chased afterward.
