Live-in or Move-out During Home Remodeling? 5 Considerations to Help You Decide

Hiring a design/build home remodel contractor to complete a Scottsdale home remodeling project at your residence is a great way to improve the functionality of your space while also adding resale value to your home. However, when you decide to have a remodeling project done of any scope, you’ll have to ask yourself the question: should I stay or should I go? Living in your home during a remodel can cut down on costs, but it can also be quite the hassle. Before you make your decision, there are some important considerations worth keeping in mind.

The Type of Remodeling Projectscottsdale room addition and kitchen remodel

Start by considering the scope of the project and which areas of your home will be affected/off limits. For example, if your remodel contractor will be doing an extensive master bathroom remodel, then you’re probably going to need to move in to another room of the home to remain comfortable.

Likewise, if your remodel is going to involve your entire house, practically all the bathrooms in your home, and even your kitchen, it’s probably in your best interest to move our for a while during the home renovations.

Considerations With Pets and Kids

You’ll also want to keep in mind how the remodeling project may affect your pets and children. A lot of home remodel contractors will have clauses written into their contracts that declare pets must be removed from the home during an extensive project, or that they’re not responsible if a pet escapes.

For children (especially younger children), you should also keep in mind that contractors won’t be able to work around your kids’ schedules. For example, you can’t expect all remodeling work to pause during your toddler’s nap time.

Your Contractor’s Requirements

These days, to cut back on liability concerns, an increasing number of contractors are beginning to require that homes be vacated for larger remodeling projects. Therefore, you’ll want to talk with your design/build remodel contractor before you sign any kind of paperwork to find out whether or not this will be the case with your specific project.

Health or Allergy Concerns

There’s no way around it: demolition and construction work generates dust and debris, and it may not be possible to prevent it from getting into your living spaces during the remodel. If you’re concerned about debris creating a health hazard or aggravating a family member’s allergies or asthma, then it will probably be in your best interest to reside elsewhere while your home is being remodeled.

Furthermore, you may consider asking your contractor if he or she can run an air filtration device during the project, which can help to cut back on air-born dust and improve air quality. You may even consider purchasing portable air purifiers for yourself.

The Budget for Your Project  how much does a scottsdale kitchen remodel cost

Last but not least, you’ll also want to consider your specific budget for your home remodel. If you’re thinking about living elsewhere while your remodel is done, it’s a good idea to budget for the additional expenses from the very beginning.

In many cases, booking a rental home for the duration of your remodeling project makes the most financial sense in the long-term, as your lack of presence at the home can help to speed up the project and avoid delays. At the same time, you get to enjoy greater comfort and peace.
